Explore physical techniques that support comic performance, with exercises in stillness, reaction, focus, clarity of mimetic gesture, illusion, physical characterization, the divided self, status in the duo and trio, the inclusion of the audience, and clown. Mark draws on his training with Etienne Decroux and Marcel Marceau. Sabrina draws on her training in the LeCoq pedagogy with Dody DiSanto with concentration in the realm of the theatrical clown. Their complimentary approaches combine to address nuts-and-bolts physical, technical and structural skills and the more esoteric issues of honesty, presence and accessibility.

Encore Stage & Studio presents Happenstance Theatre’s Plunkett & Tremolo. As star of the show, Tremolo is full of spectacular skill, knockabout comedy and classic physical antics, but Plunkett is determined to upstage him! Hilarity ensues as these two wordless fools try to prove who is who. Kids ages 4 and older and their families will be entertained by Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell’s spectacular skill and silly antics. The duo comprise Happenstance Theatre, a professional company committed to devising and producing original, performer-created visual, poetic theater.

So here is our first foray into filmmaking. We wanted at least post something to show a possible flavor of the piece. We recorded a lot of studio time after this movie was made and eventually will edit it and share it for viewing. Happy Spring! And good viewing!

Mark Jaster has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Montgomery County Executive’s Excellence in the Arts and Humanities Outstanding Artist Award for his achievements in, and contribution to, the arts in Montgomery County. Also, Happenstance Theater received an Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County Creative Projects Grant and have been invited to perform at the Montgomery County Executive’s Ball on October 19th, 2009 where we will show a short preview of Look Out Below! and Mark Jaster will receive his Outstanding Artist Award. This is a remarkably astute REVIEW! We were trying to take it easy this year having built so many new shows the last couple of years and so we decided to try something a little less “devised” and a little more “assembled”.
